In the tranquil village of Ayyangarkulam lies a hidden gem of spiritual significance and architectural splendor—the Sanjivirayar Temple. This ancient temple, dedicated to Lord Hanuman as Sanjivirayar, holds a captivating legend and bears testimony to the architectural prowess of the bygone eras.
Legend of Divine Intervention
The origins of the Sanjivirayar Temple are rooted in a remarkable legend. As per the Sthalapuran (local legend), Lord Hanuman carried the Dronagiri mountain, which held the Sanjivani herb. During his journey, a few leaves of the herb fell in the present location of the temple, imbuing the entire area with its miraculous healing properties. This divine intervention became the foundation for the temple’s establishment.
The Visionary Rajaguru
The temple owes its existence to the visionary Rajaguru Lakshmi Kumara Tatacharyar, who served as the Rajaguru of Venkatapatiraya in the Vijayanagara Empire. Known for his devotion and philanthropy, he played a crucial role in the restoration of various temples in Kanchipuram and contributed to the maintenance of holy sites in Kumbakonam, Tirumala, and other cities. His benevolence earned him the revered title of Kotikanyadanam Thirumalai Edur Immadi Royadurgam Lakshmi Kumara Thatha Desikan.
Divine Protection and Gratitude
The temple’s location holds a fascinating story. One night, while Lakshmi Kumara Tatacharyar was carrying a large sum of wealth for the renovation of the thousand-pillared hall in the Varadaraja temple, his retinue decided to rest at the present temple site. When a group of thieves attempted to steal their wealth, monkeys from the surrounding forests thwarted the robbery, guarding the wealth until morning. Recognizing this divine intervention, the Rajaguru expressed his gratitude by constructing the temple and digging a sprawling 150-acre tank called Lakshmi Saras, which later came to be known as Ayyangar Kulam. The walls of the temple bear witness to his devotion through the inscriptions of his composition, the Hanumad Vimshati—twenty verses dedicated to Lord Hanuman.
Architectural Marvels
The Sanjivirayar Temple showcases remarkable architectural elements. The southern entrance greets visitors with a twenty-four pillared Mandapa, featuring exquisite carvings and housing a shrine dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi. Adjacent to the Garbhagriha, one can find the shrine for Lord Rama, Lakshmana, and Sita. The northern entrance leads to another Mandapa adorned with multiple pillars, where eighty-five sculptures of Hanuman are intricately carved, creating a breathtaking sight for devotees and art enthusiasts alike.
